Stonewood Log Homes

CLIENT STORY

THE

Westbury

Lopez Island, Washington

A cliff-top island build that turned challenges into an unforgettable experience.
Instead of being a logistical headache, the entire venture was an absolute joy. We have zero regrets, and the home stands beautifully today.
No regrets!
— Jim Aumiller

Retired Professor Emeritus

Jim and his wife purchased their log package for The Westbury custom layout. During the design and fabrication phase in Penticton, they worked hand-in-hand with Stephen Hancock and Cory Bashuk on a constant basis. What began as a standard professional relationship quickly evolved into a close, personal friendship.

Building on a rocky cliff overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca presented immense challenges, especially when heavy snow hit during delivery. However, the Stonewood crew worked tirelessly to offload the massive timbers at the bottom of the hill and transport them safely to the summit using smaller, specialized trucks.

Getting It There

Construction of the home took place on top of a rocky cliff on Lopez Island overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Getting the log package up the steep hill was a real challenge.

The Stonewood crew helped offload the logs at the bottom of the hill and transport them to the site using smaller, specialized trucks. It was a massive undertaking—especially with the heavy snow.

Precision & Problem Solving

Erection of the log package took just three days and involved meticulous, on-site fine-tuning to make the logs fit seamlessly around four steel moment frames required by the structural engineer.

When the structural phase was complete, the log framework looked absolutely beautiful, and lifelong friendships were forged.

A Team That Stands Behind You

Throughout the entire construction process, any logistical or material support needed from Stonewood Log Homes was handled seamlessly.

When replacement rail posts were required due to splitting during shipping, the Stonewood team immediately fabricated and delivered them at no additional cost.

Lopez Island residents and visitors still continually comment on the incredible fit of the logs and the striking architectural beauty of the overall structure.

"As the owner and contractor, I was well aware of the immense complications of trying to build a custom log home on top of a cliff, on an island located an hour by ferry offshore. But instead of becoming a logistical headache—the entire venture was an incredible experience. We have absolutely no regrets."

And my wife and I owe it to Steve, Cory, Eric, and the entire The Stonewood team — thanks guys.
